The singer Steve Winwood received five Grammy Award nominations Thursday to lead the rock category, while Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon and the jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis received four nominations each.

Nominees for record of the year were ''Addicted to Love,'' performed by Robert Palmer; ''Greatest Love of All,'' by Whitney Houston; ''Higher Love,'' Mr. Winwood; ''Sledgehammer,'' Mr. Gabriel, and ''That's What Friends Are For,'' performed by Dionne Warwick and Friends.

For album of the year, they were ''Back in the High Life,'' Mr. Winwood; ''The Broadway Album,'' Barbra Streisand; ''Control,'' Janet Jackson; ''Graceland,'' Mr. Simon, and ''So,'' Mr. Gabriel.

For song of the year, they were ''Addicted to Love,'' written by Mr. Palmer; ''Graceland,'' Mr. Simon; ''Higher Love,'' Mr. Winwood and Will Jennings; ''Sledgehammer,'' Mr. Gabriel, and ''That's What Friends Are For,'' written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager.

The 5,000 voting members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences considered 210 albums and 211 singles eligible, and balloting was for nominations in 68 categories, two less than last year.
